by Ngabirwe Phiona

On behalf of the members of MIWODIF, Allow me to take this opportunity to give in my report on how the conference was held and how it went on.

INVITATION:

I was notified almost on the eve of the conference, I was never given an invitation letter but received a phone call from My Boss the Director Bwambale Robert that he had received a call from Cathy to invite me to attend the conference in Mitooma. I had to board a morning taxi to Mitooma, was received by Cathy who later took me to the conference venue.

START OF CONFERENCE The conference began at 10:00 AM , started with registration

Second activity was introduction by each participant.

I introduced myself as Ngabirwe Phiona, representing Kasese Humanist Primary School – BIZOHA and I was given platform to be a discussant in the conference.

Mr Alex was given chance to explain the THEME of the day.

INTRODUCTION OF HUMANISM TO THE PARTICIPANT

I was given time to speak about HUMANISM and introducing it to the participants. In my presentation I taught about :

  • Humanism, beliefs & critical thinking
  • Nature & Super nature
  • Superstitions & magic
  • Living a Humanistic life free from dogma and indoctrination
  • Mentioned the Humanist principles for a Global Rational World
  • Mentioned the aspirations and targets of works done by Uganda humanists with assistance from the western world which include the following:
  1. Fighting illiteracy by creating schools
  2. Improving health care through education, sensitizations by
  3. creating clinics & equipping them with medicines and skilled staffs.
  4. Promoting Science
  5. Fighting poverty through initiating self help projects.
  6. Teaching Humanism to favor people get empowered to attend to their problems by themselves
  7. Fighting Child Sacrifice, ritual murders.

TEACHING FACTS AND GUIDING PRINCIPLES ABOUT HUMANISM

Told them that in Humanism we use critical thinking skills like asking, examining, evaluating and concluding. Mentioned on the 5w’s of Who, where, When, Which, Why , How to
govern us achieve better answers to what we want to know.

A mention was made on how we can live better without basing on any religious tenets or authority.

I told the participants that though we are brought up when being told that we are children of god, we are just children of our fathers and mothers.

I was not given enough time to elaborate more on my points since it was a one day event.

TALK ON WOMEN EMANCIPATION

This part was handled by Cathy of Miwodif, It was the theme of the day.

Cathy mentioned about how women are empowered to do the work of all kind these days, nowadays women are in business, politics, education and other social ladders which was not common in the olden days.

Cathy mentioned that some women though still remain marginalized due to culture norms and in some religions.

REACTIONS FROM PARTICIPANTS

The members were given platform to ask what we discussed and most questions were on HUMANISM. I realized that most the participants were green about Humanism and it felt like it was their first time to hear about it.

I saw some participants putting on rosaries an indication of a strong religious bondage.

I however tried to explain basing on a humanist perspective.

SOME IDENTIFICATION

I realized that most of the participants who attended the conference, were from Mitooma.

Miwodif needs to put in more effort to learn intensively about Humanism and its sensitizing its members such that these women get to know more about Humanism and its goodness in improving their lives.

WAY FORWARD

All participants requested to always conduct seminars mostly on Humanism.

Members requested to extend the time of the conference since the discussants were given less time to get content.

The members requested Donors to donate more reading materials.

Some members in the conference mentioned that next time; they allow a woman to come with her husband. This to me was some kind of inferiority complex among some members.

They requested for more funds into income generating projects

The conference was adjourned at 4:00 PM With Transport and lunch allowance.

APPRECIATION:

I appreciate the MIWODIF organization for having invited me to this conference, I thank the funder of this conference who provided funds for its success.

CONCLUSION

The conference was fairly conducted in spite of the less invitation of people from Kasese where MIWODIF runs Garama Humanist Secondary School.
