A water tank was installed on March 28, 2016, in the remote village of Buhanga, in the foothills of the Ruwenzori mountains of western Uganda. Buhanga can only be reached by trail, it is 10 miles uphill from the town of Kyarumba.
The water tank will provide fresh water to the villagers, who live two miles away from the closest stream. At the present time, the villagers, especially the children, are frequently ill from contracting bacterial infections from stagnant water.
The water tank cost $500 - the money was gained through the generosity of a funder who heard about the Brighter Brains Institute (BBI) campaign on reddit. The funder wishes to remain anonymous, but the water tank is labeled “Reddit R. Atheism.”
The water tank is close to Mother Givers Humanist School—one of seven humanist/atheist/secular schools that Brighter Brains Institute has either founded, supported, or “converted” in the last two years. Kasese Humanist Primary School received the original support. BBI next built, from the ground up, BiZoHa Orphanage Humanist School and Kahendero Humanist Nursery School. Mother Givers is one of four schools that “converted” to a humanist curriculum - the others are Vision Care Humanist School, Mughete Junior Humanist School, and rays of Light Orphanage Humanist School.
BBI has installed a medical clinic at Mother Givers School, to provide free health care to the students. The clinic was funded by Bob Pellissier, another generous BBI supporter.
BBI’s goal is explained in the article Atheist Missionaries Aim to Secularize Africa to Boost Rationalism and Alleviate Violence.
