A new brick classroom is going to be built at Nyakiyumubu Widows Orphanage Humanist School - progress has started (see photos below)
The brick classroom will be the first “permanent structure” at the orphanage school. For two years, classes have been held outside, in “rooms” that are fashioned by stretching tarps between poles.
Before that, there was a mud & branches classroom, but it disintegrated after a heavy rain.
The $1000 in funds for the “Piedmont Classroom” were provided by supportive residents in the small town of Piedmont, where the Brighter Brains Institute (BBI) is headquartered.
This weekend (Saturday, September 24, from 3-6 pm) there will be a fundraiser to provide support to the Piedmont Classrooms in Uganda. Tickets are available on Eventbrite HERE.
Ticket sales have been so enthusiastic, that there is another classroom already paid for - that classroom will be constructed at Rays of Light Humanist Orphanage - it will be named “Sofia’s Classroom” after the daughter of the primary funder.
Brighter Brains Institute builds and supports orphanages, schools, and clinics in western Uganda. It is presently partnered with 12 secular schools and 5 religious schools.
Piedmont Community Service Crew might send a brigade of volunteers to Uganda this summer, to help with the BBI activities. To learn more about volunteering, click HERE.
In the photos below, notice the other structures surrounding it - the buildings made of mud and branches, and the other structures with tarps and poles. The people of Nyakiyumbu are extremely excited about getting a brick classroom, and they are very appreciative. They made the bricks themselves; you can see the brick pile in the background of one photo.
