“HAPPY THE EDUCATED ONES”

a poem by Richard, a P.6 pupil at the Rukoki campus in Uganda

They have never touched a broom or a hoe
On week days they are in the office.
On weekends they spend their time chatting!

I a poor herd’s boy, who never went to school
My Uncle says Education is not for the orphans
Educated ones say I am illiterate
I cannot discuss with them

Every day I take animals to graze
Every night I guard the home
They normally call me a breathing machine
Which never gets tired …?

When a cow gets lost I am whipped
When animals eat crops I am insulted
They again call me useless
I am not fit to stay with them

I am always in fear.

this poem was produced via the Eric Pellissier GoFundMe campaign to create art at Kasese Humanist Primary School.
