Brighter Brains Institute plans to launch Four “Women’s Empowerment Centres” with MicroLending

Brighter Brains Institute is planning to launch Four Women’s Empowerment Centers (WECs) in western Uganda. The primary amenity offered will be microloan financing.

In June 2017, seven members of BBI traveled to Africa to inspect our projects. The lack of women’s equality and leadership - even at our humanist schools - startled and upset us, and we’ve decided to make women’s advancement our top priority in the near future. The best way to help Ugandan women is to provide them with a path towards economic sustainability and independence. That’s what our microloans aim to do.

We have received excellent guidance in this direction—from Justin Silbaugh, a new BBI advisor who worked in Uganda for nonprofits for 10 years, and from Robyn Nietert, President of Women’s Microfinance Initiative. Robyn kindly provided BBI with an hour of advice, via Skype.

Our plan is to establish three Women’s Empowerment Centres that offer microloans, plus they’ll provide lectures on humanism, feminism, and sewing. The three centers will all be in places where BBI is already very well-established.

Our goal is to raise funding via grants,GoFundMes, and petitions to our email list.

The budgets for these centers is below:

The total available to be loaned out is $2,000 so this means the chosen members can get a loan of $50-$200. If the individual can’t pay back the loan, the group has to.
