BBI launched a GoFundMe on January 20th, to raise funds to end the Almajiri child slave system in northern Nigeria.
Boys as young as 4 years old are given to Islamic centers by impoverished parents. The mallams (Muslim teachers) instruct the boys solely in the Koran.
They’re generally sheltered in filth, crowded conditions, and fed only what they can attain by begging in the street.
66% of the boys end up on illicit drugs, 95% have intestinal parasites, and when they’re older they’re often employed in crime or terrorist organizations.
One expert claims 80% of the members of Boko Haram are from the Almajiri.
The GoFundMe gained $825 in revenue on its its first day - 83% of the budget goal.
