BBI is helping Maasai children in Tanzania

Posted: Fri, January 05, 2018 | By: Tanzania

Brighter Brains Institute is now partnered with Lalafofofo - another San Francisco Bay nonprofit that works in Subsaharan Africa.

Lalafofofo assists three Maasai schools situated near Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. The Maasai are an impoverished community - earning a median wage between .75 - $1.25 per day.

BBI initially provided funds for the library at Mlima Shabaha School, attended by 400 students.

Our humanist goals with the Maasai include ending child marriage (10-12 year old girls are often married to 40-year-old men, as the “third wife”). We are also very interested in ending the tribal custom of “cutting” - i.e., female genital mutilation.

Location of the school is pictured below, followed by photo of Maasai girls.
