BBI partners in Nigeria post “End the Almajiri System” posters

Posted: Mon, February 19, 2018 | By: Nigeria

Brighter Brains Institute is presently working with partners in Nigeria to send the Almajiri system.

Mubarak Bala, one of our partners, printed hundreds of posters calling on Nigeria’s president to make a campaign promise to send the Almajiri system. The posters are being displayed in numerous cities throughout Nigeria especially in the northeast where the Almajiri system is most pervasive.

Almajiri refers to boys who are given by their impoverished parents to Islamic mosques and centers - they are raised and educated here, in dire poverty and suffering physical abuse and hunger, learning nothing but the Koran. When they “graduate” from the Almajiri system they have few employable skills and the majority end up in crime or terrorism.

One estimate claims 80% of the membership of Boko Haram is composed of men who were grew up in the Almajiri system.
